They didn’t see us. They couldn’t see who we were. Historically speaking, we went from being Indians to pagans to savages to hostiles to militants to activists to Native Americans. It’s like severing a spiritual umbilical cord that reaches into the ancestral past. The history of the Indians begins with the arrival of the Europeans. The history of the People begins with the beginning of the history of the People. The history of the People is one of cooperation, collectivity, and living in balance. The history of the Indians is one of being attacked and genocide, rather than a history of peace and balance. The history of the People under attack, the Indians, in an evolutionary context, is not very long, it’s only five hundred years. The objective of civilizing us is to make Indian history become our permanent reality. The necessary objective of Native people is to outlast this attack, however long it takes, to keep our identity alive.”

Russia said Friday that US data on the Syrian government’s alleged use of chemical weapons was “unconvincing,” and warned Washington against repeating the egregious mistake it made when invading Iraq after falsely accusing Saddam Hussein of stocking weapons of mass destruction.

The Kremlin’s top foreign policy adviser Yury Ushakov also said the US decision to provide arms to Syrian rebels would damage international efforts to end a conflict that has left tens of thousands dead.

The Syrian war will take center stage next week in Northern Ireland where global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, gather for a G8 summit.

Ushakov said US officials had recently presented Russia with new information about the alleged use of chemical weapons against rebels by Syrian government forces.

“What was presented by the Americans does not look convincing to us,” he told reporters.

“I would not want to make any parallels, I would not want to believe that this data can be similar to the situation with the vial that (US) secretary of state Colin Powell brandished at the famous Security Council meeting.”

There are two areas where the USA is way out in front of the rest of the world: war and prison. The technology of killing is the main investment of US national energy, and of course the semi-public semi-private incarceration economy is flourishing while schools and roads crumble. In many other quality-of-life terms — housing, healthcare, public transportation, public access to technology, mental health support, support for people with disabilities, childcare, primary education, maternity support, social safety net — I think a lot of US Americans personally know that things are not exactly rosy but see no options for fixing it.
